Federal Tax Authority Hackathon: Innovation in Tax Administration

Internal hackathons run by tax authorities are unusual; the FTA's commitment to running one publicly was the news at the time. The prototypes from the event covered registration onboarding, returns simplification, audit-response workflows, and the early visualisations of what e-invoicing infrastructure might look like.

In the two years since, several of those prototypes have moved into production. The EmaraTax registration journey, the consolidated taxpayer dashboard, and the document-submission flow each trace back to ideas surfaced in this and adjacent innovation events. The hackathon was not the only source, but it was a credible signal that the FTA was treating taxpayer experience as a product question rather than a compliance afterthought.
